    It is a useful concept to try to appreciate what life might have been like for our ancestors prior to the high technological advances of to-day. It is only a couple of hundred years ago but a lot of changes have occured in that time which are generally thought of as improvements. Certainly improvements in public health and a rise in living standards have been paramount.

    A few years ago I discovered that my family name of GAYWOOD was prevalent in parts of Essex and especially in the vicinity of Wickham Bishops and Hatfield Peverel.

    I have collected together an account of Welsh symbolism as written for a piece of work on my Welsh family history. My ancestors came from South Wales and were mostly based around the Swansea and Neath regions.

    As a child I spent many happy holidays with my grandparents in South Wales. During that time I experienced many Welsh traditions and family values. It has been satisfying to recall some of these with a sense of nostalgia.

    My interest in WW1 came about as I researched my father's genealogy. My Grandfather had been killed in the Great War at the Battle of the Somme on 31st July 1917. Whilst writing up my family history I researched the circumstances of his death and this consumed me with its injustices which was a reaction similarly experienced by many other families at that time.
