Family History

Researching ones family history is a passion that grips many people later in life and certainly stimulates the mind and imagination. Finding out who our forefathers were, where they lived, what they did for a living, what they died from and when and where they are buried. Above all it gives a sense of who we are.

Some of the main Surnames associated with my family lines are GAYWOOD, COLLINS, CLARE, DAVIES and FREEMAN.  I have composed several genealogy charts and written a family history for GAYWOOD AND DAVIES and presented the close members of my family with a book of my research.  Anyone interested in exchanging genealogical information on these surnames is welcome to contact me using the contact form.

Within this site I have selected a variety of subjects from these researches which may be of general interest to others.

  • 19th century living  ( 1 items )
It is a useful concept to try to appreciate what life might have been like for our ancestors prior to the high technological advances of to-day. It is only a couple of hundred years ago but a lot of changes have occured in that time which are generally thought of as improvements. Certainly improvements in public health and a rise in living standards have been paramount.
  • Essex Roots  ( 1 items )
A few years ago I discovered that my family name of GAYWOOD was prevalent in parts of Essex and especially in the vicinity of Wickham Bishops and Hatfield Peverel.
  • Welsh symbolism  ( 5 items )

I have collected together an account of Welsh symbolism as written for a piece of work on my Welsh family history. My ancestors came from South Wales and were mostly based around the Swansea and Neath regions.

  • Welsh Memories  ( 1 items )
As a child I spent many happy holidays with my grandparents in South Wales. During that time I experienced many Welsh traditions and family values. It has been satisfying to recall some of these with a sense of nostalgia.
  • world war 1  ( 1 items )
My interest in WW1 came about as I researched my father's genealogy. My Grandfather had been killed in the Great War at the Battle of the Somme on 31st July 1917. Whilst writing up my family history I researched the circumstances of his death and this consumed me with its injustices which was a reaction similarly experienced by many other families at that time.
